  1. Today is an important day in the life of Cloudera

On April 28, 2017, Mike Olson, as one of the founders of Cloudera, writes about the initial public offering, and what the milestone means. “We (Mike Olson, Amr Awadallah, Christophe Bisciglia, and Jeff Hammerbacher) started Cloudera because we believe that data makes things that are impossible today, possible tomorrow. There’s more data coming, and there are plenty of impossible things to work on. Our journey is only well begun.”

Sean Anderson provides a tutorial on machine learning. From its origins in the 1950’s to today, the age of big data. Sean ascertains that larger data sets and increased access to compute power is propelling the adoption of machine learning. The blog finishes by providing concrete examples of how Cloudera customers are delivering strategic functionality like recommendation engines, predictive maintenance, and IoT workflows – all with machine learning at their core.

  1. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Science

Any organization that collects data about European Union (EU) citizens is anticipating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect in May of 2018. This informative blog outlines how GDPR affects the practice of data science. First, GDPR imposes limits on data processing and consumer profiling. Second, for organizations that use automated decision-making, GDPR creates a “right to an explanation” for consumers. Third, GDPR holds firms accountable for bias and discrimination in automated decisions. We will continue to provide insight into GDPR as it goes into effect.
