Breaking through the clouds in Asia Pacific

To quote Sam Walton, Walmart’s founder, “There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else”. This very much forms the lens for our focus here at Cloudera Asia Pacific. And it is this unwavering passion and commitment that has driven the team to strive for the very best for our customers and partners, and milestones that we have collectively attained since 2015.

As we herald in a new year and reflect on 2017, I’d like to thank those who have made 2017 an incredible year. To our amazing customers, thank you for helping us to grow and learn in ways we never thought were possible. To our partners, thank you for the immense value you had extended to our platform and the commitment to grow this business together. To my fellow Clouderans, thank you for the hard work, dedication and sacrifices you made to take this business to the next level.

We have come a long way in just a short span of two years. As our business grew, so did the team. Because of this growth, there was an immediate need to relocate and accommodate everyone in a larger premise, in what would soon become our new headquarters for APAC.

Last month, we were honoured to have Cloudera’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr Amr Awadallah; Chief Architect, Doug Cutting; and our Chief Marketing Officer, Mick Hollison, officiate the opening of our new APAC headquarters in Singapore. With no dedicated offices nor cubicles, the open concept strives to foster a culture of constant innovation, openness and collaboration, allowing our diverse team to express ideas freely and constantly challenge status quo.

In 2017 we also saw the launch of Cloudera Big Data Skills Enablement (BASE) initiative in Indonesia in March. With the support of more than 15 partners, this initiative aimed to bolster the country’s Smart City initiatives and upskills professionals across the technology industry. And soon after in July, we announced the launch of our entity in Indonesia, an event graced by Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Informatics and well attended by our customers, partners and media friends.

2017 also saw us further strengthening our partnership network, with the appointment of Tech Data as our first distributor in Asia. To contribute to our fast and growing partner ecosystem in the region, we formed new strategic partnerships with Deloitte, Hitachi and many more Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). At our inaugural Cloudera APAC partner awards, 13 top-performing partners were also recognized for achieving business excellence by collaborating with us to drive customer value and impact.

Last but certainly not least, credit must be given to the Clouderans for their tireless dedication, hard work, and sacrifices they have made that were pivotal to the victories achieved on the business front. With the support and collective efforts from the team, we are pleased to count Globe Telecom, Bank Mandiri, Bank Danamon and YES Bank as customers whom we are working with to embark on their big data journey.

As we enter 2018 we look forward to better serving our customers across Asia Pacific and will continue to build successful, strategic partnerships to help us create and deliver solutions to our joint customers. 2018 will no doubt be another exciting year. I look forward to taking the APAC business to the next level!
